My wife and I are visiting Niagara falls this weekend. What is the best route driving from Chicago to Toronto, and what places do you recommend to visit during my 3 days trip. Thanks in advance for your help.

If your going through Niagara Falls, the best route is the one that goes close to Lake Erie, Route 2 or 75. Stop at the wineries in New York for sure. The fastest way to Toronto would be through Detroit though. You will go through Hamilton Ontario, there is Dundurn Castle there which is very nice to see...

For the trip, my advice is to stay on the major roads whenever possible. Interstates and the 400-series highways are usually the fastest and (believe it or not) safest routes.

There is so much to see and do in both cities (Niagara and Toronto) that it would take a month just to list the major stuff here. If you want to fully take in both locations, you'll need more than three days for sure. I live between the two places myself, have lived here all my life, and I still haven't 'done' all of either city. In T.O. you'll want to check out the tower, the restaurants on the harbour, then hit the zoo or the Science Centre or whatever else you're interested in. In Niagara, it's the falls themselves, Clifton Hill, the Maid Of The Mist, maybe a jet-boat tour, and of course a souvenir shop (which is every 10 feet).

Accomodations will be easy to find anywhere, and I recommend the major chains wherever you are. If you've got kids with you (and can afford it), Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara is the holy grail of places to stay. You want to avoid the cheap little hotels in both towns, because believe me they can get really seedy. You can literally camp in nicer places than some of the independent hotels in Niagara and Toronto, but you're always safe at a Best Western, Mariott or Holiday Inn.

Both towns have good food and night life if that's your thing, but be careful. I know Canada is proud of it's happy-happy low crime rate, but there are people who will take advantage of and even victimize you if you give them the opportunity. Low crime doesn't mean no crime, so (just like anywhere else) don't make an easy target of yourself.

And try the beer. Have a good time.

1. Take the I-90, then turn onto I-94

2. I-94 through Detroit to the Detroit/Windsor Bridge

3. Windsor Bridge to Highway 401

4. Highway 401 to Toronto

- If your going downtown, then exit off at the 404 and take it straight south to LakeShore Rd, west to Young Street

Places I recommend: CN Tower, Kensingston Market, Air Canada for a Basketball game,

If you have three days, you have to decide on what to see, Toronto, or Niagara Falls. You can hardly do both.

Your dashboard time (sitting in the car and seeing nothing but your own dashboard while on the highway) is ~ 9 h from Chicago to Niagara Falls, ON. That is, of course an impossible number, you have to add in a few stops on the way. Count on one day going and one day to return.

Here is a complete map for you to follow.

The travelling time is about the same if you go to Toronto, but the you cannot see Niagara Falls. To drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls, one way, will take 1,5 - 2,5 h, depending on the time of the day.

If you want to fly quickly and cheaply to the Toronto Downtown Airport (Billy Bishop airport) and perhaps rent a car from there you can fly Porter Airways. That airport is right downtown, serviced by a streetcar stop 200 yards from the front entrance, making it cheap ($ 3.00) to go anywhere in the Greater Toronto area. It is also closer to Niagara Falls by a few min since your literally seconds away from the highway.

You can save on driving and go for less money by taking a bus from Toronto to Niagara Falls, there are tour buses or regular bus services, galore. To use the GO-service here, take a five min streetcar ride to Union Station.

Or catch a tour bus with some attractions pre-paid. There are many to chose from, here is one:

There are also several train connections from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Again, just take the streetcar to the Union station.
