There is a great transit system connecting Thornhill
If you're near Yonge St you can take a bus to Finch subway station (which shouldn't be a very long bus ride... maybe about 15 mins or so, much longer during rush hour).
But if you're coming up to Thornhill after a night of partying in the city, good luck finding a cab that will take you all the way up there, and it will also be about $40 or $50 from downtown. Subways stop running at around 1am and the buses going up to York region stop at about 1 or 1:30ish.

Thornhill is a pleasant community just north of Toronto city limits. While public transportation in Thornhill is currently sporadic, usually only one bus is required to reach Finch subway station, from which the city centre is easily reached. As a pleasant alternative to the municipal subway, the provincial GO Train service has a station at Langstaff in Thornhill - this train provides express service to Union Station in downtown Toronto.
