The cigarettes Q below me prompted this Q: are people in Toronto on average chain smokers like in France, or is smoking frowned upon like it is in Los Angeles? Do restaurants & bars ban smoking inside like in L.A? What about the rest of Canada? Is smoking more prevalent/accepted in French Canada??

NECESSARY DISCLAIMER: please note "on average" to mean "generally speaking". Yes I do know there are chain smokers in Los Angeles as well as non-smokers in Paris, but I'm talking about the norm. And yes I am talking about tobacco. Thank you.

Yes smoking is more prevalent in France and French Canada than in English Canada. Apparently they haven't gotten the memo. Smoking in Toronto has come to the point of barely being tolerated. Its only a matter of time until it is banned in all public places (maybe 10 years, maybe 30, but only a matter of time). Toronto is definitely closer to LA than Paris as far as attitude toward smoking goes.

He frowns on sin in general. Inebriation of any kind is man's way of counterfeiting the influence of the Holy Spirit. Of course Christians drink alcohol. Some are forbidden to drink. Some take pain killers. Some do Yoga, Eastern meditation, etc. Not necessarily forbidden, but not really things that exhibit a healthy spiritual connection to Christian faith. I got high for the first few months after I accepted Jesus as Lord. But eventually came to a point where I asked myself..."is this helping or hindering my walk of faith?" The Bible says that in Christ, "all things are legal, or under God's grace...but all things aren't beneficial." I decided that smoking weed was not something that I needed or even enjoyed once I had the peace that passes all understanding. Weed was a kind of pacifier. Jesus IS peace. Why play with imitations when I have access to the real thing?

About 1 in 5 Canadians smoke, and that number is steadily dropping. In all of Canada now (that I know of), smoking is banned anywhere people work. That includes bars and restaurants. Basically, you can smoke outside, or, in your own home, and that's about it.

Quebecers smoke more than other Canadians, on average, but, the laws are similar pretty much everywhere.

Smokers aren't quite pariahs yet in Canada, but, it's headed that way.

It's illegal to smoke in any public indoor space (stores, malls, restaurants, bars, etc.) except for cigar lounges which have special permits.

I certainly wouldn't say it's considered "cool," but it would be frowned upon more in some circles than in others. If you saw someone smoking on the street you wouldn't think much of it, but some people might frown upon their friends/family smoking.
